English and Literacy
The Australian Curriculum: English guides teachers at Holy Spirit Primary School. It aims to ensure that students:
- learn to listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts across a growing range of contexts with accuracy, fluency and purpose
- appreciate, enjoy and use the English language in all its variations and develop a sense of its richness and power to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue
- understand how Standard Australian English works in its spoken and written forms and in combination with non-linguistic forms of communication to create meaning
- develop interest and skills in inquiring into the aesthetic aspects of texts, and develop an informed appreciation of literature.

Mathematics and Numeracy
The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics guides teachers at Holy Spirit Primary School. It aims to ensure that students:
- are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, able to investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens
- develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, and are able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability
- recognise connections between the areas of mathematics and other disciplines and appreciate mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline to study.

The Australian Curriculum: Science guides teachers at Holy Spirit School. It aims to ensure that students develop:
- an interest in science as a means of expanding their curiosity and willingness to explore, ask questions about and speculate on the changing world in which they live
- an understanding of the vision that science provides of the nature of living things, of the Earth and its place in the cosmos, and of the physical and chemical processes that explain the behaviour of all material things
- an understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry and the ability to use a range of scientific inquiry methods, including questioning; planning and conducting experiments and investigations based on ethical principles; collecting and analysing data; evaluating results; and drawing critical, evidence-based conclusions
- an ability to communicate scientific understanding and findings to a range of audiences, to justify ideas on the basis of evidence, and to evaluate and debate scientific arguments and claims
- an ability to solve problems and make informed, evidence-based decisions about current and future applications of science while taking into account ethical and social implications of decisions
- an understanding of historical and cultural contributions to science as well as contemporary science issues and activities and an understanding of the diversity of careers related to science
- a solid foundation of knowledge of the biological, chemical, physical, Earth and space sciences, including being able to select and integrate the scientific knowledge and methods needed to explain and predict phenomena, to apply that understanding to new situations and events, and to appreciate the dynamic nature of science knowledge.

Humanities and Social Sciences
Students are introduced to history and geography from Kindergarten (Foundation Year), civics and citizenship in Year 3 and economics and business in Year 5.
The Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences guides teachers at Holy Spirit School. It aims to ensure that students:
- develop the ability to question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make decisions and adapt to change
- think about and respond to issues with an understanding of the key historical, geographical, political, economic and societal factors involved, and how these different factors interrelate
- are provided with a broad understanding of the world in which we live, and how they can participate as active and informed citizens with high-level skills needed for the 21st century.

The Australian Curriculum: The Arts comprises five subjects:
- Media Arts
- Visual Arts.
The Australian Curriculum: The Arts guides teachers at Holy Spirit School and aims to develop students’:
- creativity, critical thinking, aesthetic knowledge and understanding about arts practices, through making and responding to artworks with increasing self-confidence
- arts knowledge and skills to communicate ideas; they value and share their arts and life experiences by representing, expressing and communicating ideas, imagination and observations about their individual and collective worlds to others in meaningful ways
- use of innovative arts practices with available and emerging technologies, to express and represent ideas, while displaying empathy for multiple viewpoints
- understanding of Australia’s histories and traditions through the arts, engaging with the artworks and practices, both traditional and contemporary, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
- understanding of local, regional and global cultures, and their arts histories and traditions, through engaging with the worlds of artists, artworks, audiences and arts professions.

Bring Your Own iPad Program (BYO iPad)
This program has been implemented in Years 5 and 6 and supports development of the ICT Capabilities and the Digital Technologies component of the Australian Curriculum.
The Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) recognises that in a digital age, and with rapid and continuing changes in the ways that people share, use, develop and communicate with ICT, young people need to be highly skilled in its use. To participate in a knowledge-based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society now and into the future, students need the knowledge, skills and confidence to make ICT work for them at school, at home, at work and in their communities.
At Holy Spirit we encourage the use of technology as a valuable tool that assists and supports learning. Integrated into all areas of the curriculum, iPads (and computers) are used to enhance student learning and prepare them for the digital world in which we live. Technology allows students to learn in different ways and develop a range of learning skills. Our curriculum provides students with authentic and connected learning challenges that foster curiosity, confidence, persistence, innovation, creativity, respect and cooperation.
Français / French
All students at Holy Spirit Primary School from Kindergarten to Year 6 attend French lessons each week which are held in the dedicated French room.
The curriculum includes learning the French language as well as cultural aspects of France and francophone countries and communities around the world.
Activities include singing, poetry, listening to stories, watching cartoons and movies, conversation, art and craft, using computers and iPads and playing pétanque. Connections are made with other curriculum areas where possible.
Holy Spirit students have achieved great success in various competitions and received top awards from the Alliance Française, the Embassy of France and Language Perfect Championships.
All classes at Holy Spirit School have a 40 minute lesson with a Teacher Librarian each week. During this time the students are given the opportunity to borrow and return books, engage in literacy based learning experiences and are given opportunities to develop a love of reading.
The library is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at lunch from 1.20pm – 2pm.
During this time, children can spend some quiet time reading, drawing, playing chess or other board games.
Each grade also has an allocated day to use the computers and access educational games on the internet including Coolmaths games and Reading Eggs.
Parents are always welcome to drop in and see our beautiful library space, check out the books and resources, or lend a helping hand.
Please follow these helpful hints to keep our library books in a condition that allows others to enjoy them.
- Always bring a library bag to transport your books to and from school
- Keep your books in a safe place at home, away from pets, food and drink.
- If a book is damaged, please return it to the library so it can be repaired using the proper equipment.
- If a book is misplaced or lost please contact the Teacher Librarians. A fee will need to be paid to replace any lost items.
Health and Physical Education
The Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education guides teachers at Holy Spirit Primary School. It aims to ensure that students:
- access, evaluate and synthesise information to take positive action to protect, enhance and advocate for their own and others’ health, wellbeing, safety and physical activity participation across their lifespan
- develop and use personal, behavioural, social and cognitive skills and strategies to promote a sense of personal identity and wellbeing and to build and manage respectful relationships
- acquire, apply and evaluate movement skills, concepts and strategies to respond confidently, competently and creatively in a variety of physical activity contexts and settings
- engage in and enjoy regular movement-based learning experiences and understand and appreciate their significance to personal, social, cultural, environmental and health practices and outcomes
- analyse how varied and changing personal and contextual factors shape understanding of, and opportunities for, health and physical activity locally, regionally and globally.

In addition, all students at Holy Spirit Primary School from Kindergarten to Year 6 attend a PE lesson each week which is held in one of the areas of our beautiful school setting.
All children are learning the various fundamental motor skills of physical activity. Identified skills activities include throwing, catching, jumping, striking, running, kicking, agility, balance and coordination.
As well as the above, the children learn a variety of modified sports and games that incorporate a combination of the motor skills.
In the wider sporting sphere, Holy Spirit students have achieved great success in many team and individual sporting competitions. We have won many team competitions such as the Sullivan Shield (Year 5 & 6 Rugby League), the Raiders Girls League tag (current champions) among many other events. Several students regularly attend National events.
We actively support and promote sport for all, not just for elite. We are very proud to say at Holy Spirit that we are by far the largest participating school at a range of minor sports such as golf and t-ball. Sport is a very important activity for the whole child, one that many children see as their chance to shine!
At Holy Spirit Primary School, we believe in celebrating individual difference by creating an environment that is inclusive of every student. It is a whole school responsibility to ensure that the social, emotional and academic needs of all students are catered for in all areas of school life.
The Learning Support Team at Holy Spirit assists students who have additional educational needs. We coordinate a variety of programs which offer support for students and also provide extension and enrichment. Parents, Classroom Teachers and the Learning Support Teacher work collaboratively to ensure that each child’s needs are being met in the classroom.
